The M.N.A. for Laurier-Dorion and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Health and Social Services, Mr. Gerry Sklavounos, submitted a petition today to the National Assembly of Québec, asking that the question period and other parliamentary debates be translated into Quebec sign language (L.S.Q.). Presently, only a sub-titled re-transmission of question period is available.

“A significant proportion of Montréal's deaf community resides in my riding and these citizens would like to follow the exchanges that unfold in our National Assembly in the same way that they can follow those of the Canadian Parliament. They mobilized to circulate this petition and it was my pleasure to be able to present it in their name” declared Mr. Sklavounos.

To mark the occasion, Mr. Guy Fredette, President of the Club Lions Montréal – Villeray Sourds, the organisation that spearheaded the petition, travelled to Québec and was present in the gallery for the petition's submission. “I would like to thank our M.N.A. for his habitual collaboration which enabled us to make the needs of our community known to our elected officials” rejoiced Mr. Fredette.
