Two dozen students of Sinclair Laird Elementary School joined their voices with 70 other children from Gardenview elementary and Pierre de Coubertin Elementary in a spectacular tribute to movie-music that took place on Sunday the 25th of April 2010 at Oscar Peterson Concert Hall.
The concert was organized by Panarmonia Atelier Musical in collaboration with Gardenview, Pierre de Coubertin and Sinclair Laird Elementary Schools. The three schools have a choir/vocal workshop directed by soprano Maria and tenor Dimitris Ilias who are the artistic directors of the non-profit Panarmonia.
On stage the sweet voices of the young Park-exers opened the concert with the stirring song “Children Together” in honor of the evenings’ benefitting charity the Children’s Wish Foundation. Shawn Hoffman, teacher at Sinclair Laird, was the narrator of the show beautifully transporting the audience from movie to movie while action on stage was shared between the 95 kids, Gardenview and Pierre de Coubertin Alumni soloists and four magnificent dancers from Concordia University Dance Department.
Principals Viola Vathilakis, Nick Katalifos and Tina Lavranos from the three schools were major supporters of the project as it gave an opportunity to expose the children to beautiful music, to teach them how to collaborate in such a big complicated music event, to raise their self esteem and sing in such a prestigious hall.
The evening ended with Nicest Kids in Town from the movie Hairspray in which kids and dancers altogether celebrated 50s GoGo infectious music and dance. As I walked out of the Hall after the show children were still singing:
“Somewhere out there, if love can see us through
There we’ll be together, in that big somewhere out there”
