“Make Education our Top Priorty”
By Silvet Ali • PXN

Chairman of the Federation of School Boards of Quebec
(FCSQ), Andre Caron

The Quebec public school system is under constant criticism. It can be constructive at times, but it usually ignores the positive things public schools have achieved over the years. "Everyone has an opinion on public schools. What we must do is take the necessary action to restore education onto the list of our top priorities so Quebecers don't fall behind. It is the time to take action now," was the message delivered by the chairman of the Federation of School Boards of Quebec (FCSQ), Andre Caron, in time for the new school year.
How does Quebec rank?
"Many Quebecers are not aware of the great, high quality, motivated people behind all the criticisms of public schools, that are dedicated to the success of our youth," continued Caron. In the statement, Caron reveals that Quebec actually has one of the best public education systems in the world, in terms of basic vocational training. Here are some facts released in the statement.
- Quebec students rank 5th in the world in mathematics - 8th and 10th in reading and sciences respectively. (International Student Assessment Program 2007)
 - Quebecers 13 years of age finished first in the country in reading and math, and second in science. (Minister of Education council April 2008).
-For the ninth consecutive time, Quebecers have won the Olympic's Canada vocational and technical training. (May 2008)
-Quebec won the title as best in the world in academic achievement at the 39th World Trades held in Japan. The Canadian team was comprised of 27 members, 18 from Quebec. They won 2 gold medals, 1 silver and 2 bronze. (November 2007).
On the global field
Caron believes the system is by no means perfect, but by focusing on getting young people the basic training and the qualifications enabling them to become productive members of society, is where we should be focusing our efforts. "In the match taking place on global field now, we need our team players to be in the pack of winning teams. We cannot afford to leave any behind," explained Caron.
FCSQ chairman Caron believes this can be achieved by making young people's education one of our top priorities as a society. "I would like tell all parents, the media, and businesses to promote the importance of education within the community, and those working on the front lines for our student's success. We have a public school system that ranks as one of the best in the world. Let's give it the credit it deserves," he said.
